SUPREME COURT (NUMBER OF JUDGES) AMENDMENT BILL, 2019


KEY FACTS REGARDING THE BILL

The Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2019 was introduced in Lok Sabha on August 5, 2019 by the Minister of Law and Justice, Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad.

The Bill amends the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956. 

The Act fixes the maximum number of judges in the Supreme Court at 30 judges (excluding the Chief Justice of India).

The Bill increases this number from 30 to 33.

The Bill also stated that the creation of thee additional posts of judges in the Supreme Court would result in the total expenditure of approximately Rs 6,80,00,000 that will be drawn from the Consolidated Fund of India.


Prior to the passing of Bill, the Supreme Court had a sanctioned strength of 31 judges. The move has now taken the number of posts at the Apex Court to 34.
