INTEREST RATES OF SAVING SCHEMES CUT BY THE GOVERNMENT

The cut that took place includes the following :
  1. Senior Citizen Saving Scheme : The rate has been cut down to 8.6% as compared to 8.7% previously.
  2. The 5-year National Savings Certificate Rate has also been cut down to 7.9% from earlier 8%.
  3. The deposits in the Pension Provident Fund will now fetch an interest at a rate of 7.9% compounded annually down from previous 8%.
  4. Kisan Vikas Patrika : The rate has been cut down to 7.6% maturing in 113 months from 7.7% maturing in 112 months earlier.
  5. The rate of interest has been kept at 4% for the Savings deposits.
  6. For timely deposits of one, two and three years the rate has been reduced to 6.9% from 7% compounded quarterly.
  7. For 5-year time deposits, the rate has been reduced from 7.8% to 7.7%.
  8. Sukanya Samridhi Yojana : The scheme would now fetch an interest rate of 8.4% compared to earlier 8.5%.
  9. The rate of interests on small savings schemes are reviewed on a quarterly basis and as such those new rates will be applicable till 30th Sept. 2019.

MEKEDATU DAM PROJECT

  • Location : In Mekedatu, situated in Ramnagaram district of Karnataka across the river Cauvery from Tamil Nadu.
  • The project had been started by the Karnataka Government.
  • The primary objective of the project is to supply drinking water to Banglore and recharge the groundwater of the region.

About the Conflict 

According to Tamil Nadu, the Project violates the final award of the Cauvery River Water Tribunal, and that the construction of the reservoir would result in impounding the flow in intermediate catchment below Krishnaraja Sagar and Kabini reservoirs and Billigundulu in common border of Tamil Nadu and the Karnataka. 

As per  Karnataka, the project will not come in way of the releasing the stipulated quantum of water to Tamil Nadu nor will it be used for irrigation purposes.

ONE NATION, ONE RATION CARD SCHEME

  • The scheme would ensure that all beneficiaries can access PDS across the nation from any of the shop of their choice.
  • The biggest beneficiary of this flagship scheme would be the migrant labourers and workers who move to other states to seek better opportunities for the job.
  • This scheme would provide a freedom to beneficiaries as they will not be bound to any one PDS shop and reduce their dependency on shop owners

THE EDUCATIONAL QUALITY AND UPGRADATION AND INCLUSION PROGRAM (EQUIP)

This is the 5 year vision and action plan to transform higher education system. The key goals would be:
  1. Doubling the Gross Enrollment Ratio (GER) in higher education.
  2. For the assurance of quality of the institutions, Accreditation to be done.
  3. To promote Research and Innovation in top countries.
  4. To double the employability of the graduates.
  5. To revamp the governance and the funding mechanism for these institutions.
The project is likely to involve an investment of approximately Rs. 1.5 lakh crores over a span of 5 years.

NASA TO SEND A DRONE TO TITAN - SATURN'S LARGEST MOON

The project is named as DRAGONFLY MISSION and its prime objective is to search for the building block of life on Titan. The mission is projected to be launched in 2026 and will land in 2034. The mission will send a rotor craft to fly to dozen of locations across the icy moon. 

The vehicle would comprise of 8 rotors and will first land at the equatorial 'Shangri La' dune, exploring the region in short trips before building up to longer leapfrogs flights of upto 8 kms.

Why Titan? 
Titan is the only celestial body besides our planet which is known to have liquid rivers, lakes and seas on its surface, though instead of water it contains Hydrocarbons like Methane and Ethane.

SERBIA'S DONKEY CHEESE

It is said to be the world's most expensive Cheese which have a price of $1,130 for a kilogram. 

The cheese has been derived out of the milk of the donkeys who live on nature reserve in Northern Serbia called ZASAVICA.

The milk has properties similar to breast milk and is believed to be a cure of a range of ailments, including asthma and bronchitis. 

The milk has a high protein content and United Nation recognized it as a good alternative for those who are allergic to the Cow's Milk.

GO TRIBAL CAMPAIGN 

The campaign has been launched by the Tribal Affairs Ministry along with TRIFED in association with the Amazon Global.


It aims encourage and promote tribal arts and crafts as well as has an objective of providing socio-economic welfare benefits to over 700 Indian Tribes.

TRIFED : It is an organization under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs and is particularly involved in marketing development of the tribal art and craft under the global brand name of 'TRIBE INDIA'.
